Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Chairperson Justice (retd) Dr Aftab Hussain Saikia has advised people to gift the Constitution, instead of religious books, on social occasions so that people are able to know their rights and duties.

Even learned people in the country were seen to be violating human rights, he said adding that one should read the Constitution to know of his rights and duties.

"One should make it a point to gift the Constitution to as many people as possible, rather than gifting religious books during social occasions," the MHRC Chairperson said at a programme here yesterday.

In view of the innumerable cases of human rights violation in India, there is an urgent need to set up Human Rights Courts in every district of the country, said the former Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Sikkim High Courts.
