Noted space scientist K Kasturirangan Thursday said the machine intelligence (MI) technology has enormous potential to shape the future of various sectors of the Indian economy as it is fast becoming the new face of doing business.

The former ISRO chief said in view of the recent advances in MI (also known as artificial intelligence or AI), it is imperative for policymakers to come with an action plan to get maximum benefit from this technology.

They should deliberate on a policy to drive MI innovation, adaption and proliferation for India to get utmost advantage from its advancement, said Kasturirangan, who now chairman of the National Education Policy Committee.

He was addressing the 35th convocation ceremony of the Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University here in Eastern Maharashtra.

"India has always played 'back office to the world' role in many sectors of IT. A vast majority of persons who use MI are not researchers but practitioners for whom there could be a global demand among industries," he said.

The renowned scientist said the future of Indian market lies in the deployment of new and emerging technologies like big data analytics and MI.

India has the potential to be in the top three prominent members of the global big data market in the next three years, he added, citing figures of expected growth for the analytics market in the country.

Kasturirangan urged students to prepare themselves for taking up challenging professional careers which can be rewarding both intellectually and financially.

He advised them to aspire for deepening and broadening their knowledge, experience the power of collective team work and to get guided by higher values which they believe in.

On the occasion, degrees and diplomas were conferred on students and research scholars.
