A middle-aged woman was burnt to death while her husband was seriously injured in a fire at a residential building at Dumdum in the northern fringes of Kolkata today.

An officer of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, under which the area falls, said the charred body of Pratima Kundu (52) was found in the gutted mattress of the bed room while Pratima's 53-year old husband was found lying with extensive burn injuries on the door step of the room as fire services personnel entered the premises after dousing the flames.

The man was admitted to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The flames were spotted by neighbours from the groundfloor of the building and screams for help was heard at around 7 am but locals could not enter as the blaze already engulfed the entire ground floor, in which the couple lived.

Two fire tenders put off the blaze which was suspected to have been caused by short circuit.
