Mild tremors were today felt in some areas of north west Madhya Pradesh after a massive earthquake measuring 7.5 on Richter scale jolted north India.

No report of casualties or damage to property has been received so far in the state, an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

"Gwalior and Chambal revenue divisions, Ratlam, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Ujjain, Agar, Rajgarh, Tikamgarh and Chhattarpur districts experienced minor tremors at around 2.40 PM," IMD's Bhopal office director Dr Anupam Kashyapi told PTI.

He said aftershocks may be experienced in MP in next two days, but there was no need to panic as the epicentre of the quake was far-off.

"Some earthen (kuccha) houses might have developed minor cracks in the quake in north-west MP," he said.

"MP Chief Secretary called me and asked about the quake and its aftermath in the state. To my knowledge it has not caused any damage to life and property in the state," Dr Kashyapi said.

Some people here (state capital) said they felt the mild tremors of quake, but no official has yet confirmed it.

A massive earthquake measuring 7.5 on Richter scale today jolted north India.

The earthquake, epicentred in the Hindukush mountain range in Afghanistan, struck at around 2.40 PM, sending ripples across several states like Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR), Punjab, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.

People frantically rushed out of their houses and offices as the ground shook. In the national capital, metro services were briefly halted.

In Srinagar, residents said they saw the buildings "swinging", reminding them of the devastating quake in 2005.

According to National Center for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Science, the epicentre of the earthquake was the Hindukush mountain range-known to be a high seismic zone.

The earthquake occurred at the depth of 190 kms.
