Militant shot dead, huge cache of arms recovered

An armed militant was shot dead today in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district following which a huge cache of arms was recovered, police said.

The arms and weapons recovered include one HK rifle, one AK rifle, an SLR, a 2 inch Mortar, a grenade launcher, two mortar shells, one Chinese grenade, seven magazines and more than 160 ammunition, SP A Mishra said.

Acting on a tip off, special state police commandos stormed a camp at Gare Rindi area under Nongalbibra police station in the district at around 11 AM, he said.

Following a half-an-hour-long gun fight, an unidentified male dead body with an AK Rifle in his hands was recovered, Mishra said.
 

The arms and ammunitions were found thereafter.

He said a walky-talky, three mobile handsets, a notebook, other documents and demand notes were also seized from the spot.

On Monday, Chokpot police raided Undamari village and shot dead one cadre while others managed to escape dragging an injured cadre away, the SP said.

Police operations have been intensified in Chokpot area which is considered as the hotbed of armed militants.
