The militants blasted the grenade at the house of the executive engineer of electricity department, Puyam Birendra singh (45) this morning.
The official and his family members were present at the time of the explosion.
The motive behind the crime was not immediately known, but non-payment of money to militants who demanded a huge sum from the official could be the reason, sources said.
