A mine worker, who was staging a dharna here against state's decision to cancel mining and quarrying licenses, was crushed to death when a person ran over his jeep on the protesters after dispute over some issue.

SP (Rural) Rahul Prakash said the mine workers' union in Balesar village had called for one-day village bandh and its members were staging a sit-in against government's recent decision to cancel mining and quarrying licenses.

"Some villagers (who) objected to the bandh, entered into an altercation while pressurising the workers to call it off. This led to a clash between them (after which) a person of the opposing group drove his jeep over the protesters," he said.

Four injured were rushed to the hospital, where one person identified as Gumna Ram Prajapat died, Prakash said.

The driver left the vehicle at a distance and fled from the spot, Prakash said, adding efforts are on to arrest him.

Meanwhile after the incident, a group of angry villagers blocked the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer highway demanding arrest of the accused.

The also pelted stones on policemen who had rushed to the pacify them.

The villagers, however, called of their blockade after being assured by the authorities of adequate action in the case.
