A mining inspector was today arrested for allegedly taking bribe to "extend his cooperation" for carrying out illegal mining activities in the area.

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau today caught Yograj, posted at mining check post Rajban under Paonta sub- division, for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 10,500 from a Paonta resident, said SP, Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Bureau (Shimla) Surender Verma.

Yograj used to take bribe to "extend his cooperation" for carrying out illegal mining activities in the area, he said, adding that he would charge Rs 10,000 for each mineral-loaded tractor.

The matter was reported to the bureau by the complainant in the case Zahid Hussain, a miner of Paonta.

The accused had allegedly asked Hussain to pay an additional Rs 4,500 per tractor on account of departmental fine.

After registering a formal complaint, the bureau laid a trap and arrested Yograj at Badripur near Paonta.

Vigilance sources said as per the accused's demand, the complainant paid him Rs 15,000, but the officer gave a receipt of Rs 4500 as departmental fine and took Rs 10,500 as bribe.

The SP said the accused was being brought to the Nahan vigilance police station where a case under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against him.

He will be produced in a court tomorrow.
