An eight-year-old girl was charred to death after a gas cylinder exploded at her house in a village in Bundi district this morning, police said.

Pappu Bhatt (33), a daily wage labourer, was boiling milk on a gas stove in his single-room house in Dora village, while three of his children were playing nearby, when suddenly the domestic gas cylinder exploded causing heavy fire, they said.

Deepika, the eldest of Bhatt's three children, was close to the stove and got burnt alive in the incident, said Sampat Singh, SHO at Dabi police station, under whose jurisdiction the village falls.

Bhatt, along with his two other children, somehow managed to escape from the flames with some burn injuries on his legs, Singh said.

Bhatt's wife was out in the neighbourhood when the incident occurred.

The explosion's impact was such that several household items in the house were reduced to ashes, while the room ceiling got cracked in the fire, the SHO said.

Bhatt was undergoing treatment at Maharao Bheem Singh hospital at Kota, while his daughter's body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem.

Fire brigade had to be called from Bundi district headquarters and the flames could be doused after hour-long efforts, SHO Singh said.

A police case has been lodged.
