Minor girl drowns in irrigation dam in south Kashmir

A minor girl drowned in an irrigation dam in Anantnag district of south Kashmir, prompting authorities to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident after villagers staged protests against the state government.

Three girls slipped into the dam, constructed by Irrigation and Flood Control department, while playing they were playing in the open in Chinigund village of Dooru in Anantnag district yesterday, resulting into the death of one of them while two others were rescued.

The incident sparked violent protest by villagers who accused the department of leaving the dam without fencing.

Taking note of the incident, District Magistrate of Anantnag today ordered magisterial enquiry for ascertaining the factual position and circumstances which led to the drowning and subsequent death of one girls, an official spokesman said.
 

He said the inquiry will be conducted by Additional District Magistrate Anantnag to be assisted by Tehsildar Shangus as Enquiry officer.

"The inquiry report shall be furnished to District Magistrate Anantnag within three days," the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, a girl who went missing on June 9 was found dead at a power canal in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir.

Body of Shahnaza, a resident of Chinner village of Kangan, was fished out from the power canal near Warpash village of Gutlibagh this morning, a police spokesman said adding the girl went reported missing on June 9.

"After conducting medico-legal formalities, the body of the deceased was handed over to her relatives for last rites," the spokesman added.
