A four-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh, who was holidaying with her parents in Goa, drowned in a swimming pool of a hotel near famous Calangute beach today, the police said.

"Aarini Gupta died due to drowning at hotel Sea Breeze resort at Calangute this afternoon," said police inspector Jivba Dalvi.

Gupta was staying at the hotel with her parents and other family members, he said.

"As her family members planned to enter the swimming pool in afternoon they asked their daughter and other children to wait in the hotel lobby.

"However, the girl entered the swimming pool without the knowledge of her parents," the police officer said.

He said some people who were inside the pool responded to the girl's pleas for help, but it was too late.

"As the girl was feeling uneasy after taken out of water, she was rushed to a government-run health centre at Candolim village, where she was declared brought dead," Dalvi said.

The Gupta family, which hails from Shahajanpur, had come to Goa along with four families and relatives. They were supposed to leave on May 14, he added.
