A 16-year-old girl was injured when metal ball-bearings were allegedly fired at her by a teenaged boy, whose marriage proposal she had rejected, in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh today, police said.

The incident occurred in Ramakuppam mandal of Chittoor when the boy shot at least five cycle ball bearings at the girl using a country-made weapon resulting in minor injuries to the girl on her legs, they said.

"For the past few months, the boy, a shepherd, aged around 17, had been pestering the girl to marry him. He followed her when she took her sheep for grazing and proposed her to marry him, to which she refused after which he shot four-five cycle ball bearings at her through a country-made weapon," Ramakuppam SHO Sunil Kumar Reddy said.

Ramakuppam Police registered a case under relevant sections of IPC and Arms Act against the boy and took him into custody.

"He is being questioned in this connection," the police officer said.
