A 17-year-old girl, who had allegedly been sold to a man by her mother, was today rescued from the "buyer" with the help of social activists and village panches.

The victim has alleged that she was sold to a middle-aged man, identified as Bappa, for Rs 50,000 by her mother in connivance with another woman, Kamaljit Kaur.

She further alleged that she was raped by two unidentified youths at Bappa's house.

However, although her mother knew about her ordeal, she did nothing to help her, the girl alleged.

She later approached village panches with her case and it was them who called police and got her freed.

She said that her statement had been recorded before a magistrate but police had yet to take her for a medical test.

When asked, police said said they had received the girl's complaint and were looking into the matter.
