In a bizzare incident, a 9-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze, police sources said here today.
The girl, a class three student in a government school in Bhagwatipara area of the city, poured kerosene on her body and torched herself, the police said.
Her parents had gone out to work but when her mother returned home she found her daughter engulfed in flames, they said.
"The girl was brought to the civil hospital here in a critical condition and died after being treated for a short while," Assistant Sub-Inspector Natubhai Chauhan said.
"She did not like to go to school and had not prepared for her final exam to be held soon due to which she took the extreme step," the police official said.
