Members of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes met the 10-year-old rape victim who had been detained for several hours by police here when she had approached them to lodge a complaint.

Two members of the NCSC, including Deputy Director Kaushlendra Kumar, met the girl and her family last evening in Meerpur village of the district.

Kumar said the Commission will make a recommendation to the Uttar Pradesh government to provide monetary compensation to the girl's family and also ask them to register a case against the erring police officials.

Two women constables have already been suspended while the Mahila Thana in-charge Gayashree Chauhan and sub-inspector Sarita Dwivedi, who were initially shunted to the police lines, have also been placed under suspension.

The minor, who had allegedly been raped by a local on Sunday, had approached a Mahila Thana here along with her parents on Monday to lodge a complaint, but the police instead kept her in the lock-up for several hours.

After media highlighted the incident, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the news reports and today issued a notice to the UP government seeking an explanation by Monday.

Meanwhile, an FIR was today registered against unidentified policemen for the illegal confinement.
