A 15-year-old boy was shot dead and about half a dozen villagers were injured by seven cattle robbers who fled with 18 bovines, triggering protests by locals on the Yamuna Expressway today.

The incident occurred last night when the cattle robbers loaded 18 buffaloes onto a truck from farmer Chandra Pal's residence in Kishanpur area, SP (Rural) Arun Kumar said.

When his son Chhotu tried to stop them, they opened fire at him, he said, adding the victim died on the way to a hospital.

Police said about half a dozen villagers, who reached the spot, were also shot at and injured by the robbers.

Enraged over the incident, the villagers today protested against the law and order situation and blocked the Yamuna Expressway.

The protesters were soon pacified by the police and the Expressway was cleared for traffic, the Additional SP said.

He said efforts are underway to apprehend the accused.
