Press Trust of India Coimbatore
: Close on the heels of cutting and smuggling out of a fully grown sandalwood tree behind the Collector's bungalow some days ago, miscreants cut another tree early today but failed to smuggle it out.

In the first incident, miscreants had cut and taken away the tree near the Collector's camp office at Race Course Road on Wednesday night.

In the second incident, they managed to cut the tree on a private land in Saravanampatti, but failed to take it away as a private telecom official residing in the area woke up around 2.30 AM on hearing the sound of falling vessels and utensils in his house, police said.

He rushed to the rear of the house and saw a four member gang scaling the compound wall and a fallen 15 foot tall cut sandalwood tree on his bedroom window.

Police, on receiving a complaint, rushed to the spot and recovered the hacksaw used to cut the tree. They suspect it to be the handiwork of locals.
