A total of 19 persons lost their lives in 113 accidents at various private, semi-government, and state-run power generation plants across Gujarat in the last two years, the Legislative Assembly was told today.

"While 12 persons died in 44 mishaps in year 2016, seven persons were killed in 69 accidents that occurred in 2017," Energy Minister Saurabh Patel told the House during Question Hour.

He said apart from these 19 deaths, a total of 102 persons- 40 in 2016 and 62 in 2017- were grievously injured in all the 113 accidents.

Congress MLA Amit Chavda had raised a written query seeking the details of the compensation paid to the family members of the deceased as well as the steps taken by the government to prevent recurrence of such accidents.

In his written reply, Patel said a compensation of Rs 2.66 crore was paid in year 2016 to all the victims while that of Rs 46.54 lakh in the next year.

He said the government was taking various measures like organising mock drills, providing safety-related training to employees by experts, inspection of safety measures implemented by plant management and distribution of high quality safety equipment to the workers, at these plants.
