The vessel named 'Rankuri' had been missing off the Maldivian coast since September 17 and was finally traced and rescued by the Indian naval ship INS Shardul, this afternoon.

The Maldives authorities had launched a search and rescue operation to locate the missing boat.

The government of Maldives requested Indian Navy for assistance on September 19 to locate the vessel, official sources said. The navy responded promptly and diverted INS Shardul which was carrying out surveillance in the Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Indian Navy had also kept a surveillance aircraft standby for the search.

INS Shardul, which is a landing ship used for amphibious operations and carries a helicopter, traced the missing vessel yesterday afternoon. The boat was later escorted by the naval ship close to its destination.
