What is more interesting is the fact that CPI-M's rebel student faction SFI-JNU appears to have made an impression on the student community, despite having been disowned by its parent party.
The final result in the JNU students union poll will be declared tomorrow but the initial results for council seats showed there was no clear wave for any single outfit and that erstwhile 'outsiders' had started making a dent in the campus politics.
AISA, that had in the March elections swept as many as 16 of the 29 councillor seats, has won at least six seats this time, and ABVP -- which was largely considered an outsider in JNU till a few years back -- was also winning at least six seats.
SFI-JNU, the party of SFI rebels who were expelled by the SFI's state leadership for taking an opposing stand from the parent party on the issue of support to Pranab Mukherjee's presidential candidature, was also displaying an impressive run, winning at least 4 seats.
The NSUI also won 2 seats in the councils, while independents had won three seats. The results for all council seats were not available tonight as counting was still on.
In fact, SFI-JNU's presidential candidate Lenin Kumar was leading against his AISA rival Om Prasad by around 150 votes at the last count tonight, according to sources.
JNU is generally a Left bastion where student wings of national parties like NSUI and ABVP have not had much inflenece traditionally.
