Mizoram government has collected Rs 723.43 lakh excise duty on liquor since March 16 last when the wine shops were opened in the state till June 25, Excise and Narcotics Minister R. Lalzirliana said in the state assembly today.

Replying to a question from Dr K. Beichhua of the Mizo National Front (MNF), Lalzirliana said that wine shops were opened as per provisions of the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition and Control Act, 2014.

He said that 1,008 people have been arrested under the MLPC Act. 2014 and those convicted were fined or imprisoned or tasked to undertake public service like cleaning market places, hospitals or court premises.

The fund-strapped state government legislated the MLPC Act in 2014 replacing the stringent Mizoram Total Liquor Prohibition Act, 1995 in force in the state since February 20, 1997.

Wine shops opened under the Mlpc act 2014 from March 16, 2015 for the first time after 28 years as partial prohibition was in place since 1987 and the dry law was in force for 18 years.
