Minister P C Lalthanliana today said that there were 53 unauthorised settlements/villages in the state.

In a written reply to a query by Lalruatkima of the Mizo National Front (MNF) in the state assembly, Lalthanliana said that there were 812 villages and 32 sub-villages, including 276 villages within the three district council areas, in the state.

He said that village council authorities were instructed not to allow any unauthorised settlement inside their respective jurisdictions.

"Eviction orders were issued and enforced in cases where such illegal and unauthorised settlements could create problems for the people of the areas," he said.

He, however, said that some of the unauthorised settlements were accepted as sub-villages by the District Level Screening Committee on the recommendations of the concerned Village Councils.
