Mizoram Home minister R Lalzirliana today handed over Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of two policemen killed in an ambush attack by the Manipur-based Hmar militants near Mizoram-Manipur border Zokhawthiang hamlet on March 28 last, an official statement said.

Lalzirliana handed the ex-gratia payment to the families of Sub Inspector Zoramthara Khawlhring and driver Lalchuailova while the ex-gratia would be handed over to the kin of Hmangaihmawia later as the family members of the slain policemen could not come to Aizawl today.

Three policemen were gunned down when militants belonging to the Hmar People's Convention (Democrats) ambushed a team of Assembly committee on government assurances going to the north eastern parts of the state to inspect development projects.

Of those involved in the ambush, one militant was killed in an encounter while six insurgents were arrested and people accused of giving information about the movements of the assembly committee members were also arrested.

Lalzirliana said that the government would not rest until all the militants involved in the ambush were put behind bars.

He said that though the HPC (D) leadership communicated their willingness to hold talks, the state government could not give positive response until all the arms and ammunition taken from the policemen during the March 28 ambush were returned to the government.
