United Democratic Front (UDF) sponsored independent candidate for the Mizoram Lok Sabha seat Robert Romawia Royte today refuted charges against him made by ruling Congress and said he did not have any graft case pending against him.

Addressing a press conference in Aizawl, Royte said he sought the state Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) as well as the vigilance department's help to check whether there was any case pending against him while being in government service.

"I was told that there was nothing against me... I have mentioned this in my affidavit" he said, adding that he is a contractor registered with the state PWD but he could not be regarded as holding an office of profit and the Returning Officer (RO) also explained the matter.

The Congress had submitted a complaint asking the RO to disqualify Royte for allegedly giving false information in his affidavit and holding an office of profit.

The UDF candidate said that the NDA would come to power at the Centre and it was important to have an independent supporting the alliance.

Senior leaders of the eight-party UDF, who accompanied Royte at the press conference were also hopeful that he would be inducted in the Union Ministry if NDA came to power.
