Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) MLA Dhulu Mahato and his supporters allegedly attacked a police team and forcibly took away an accused from its custody, police said today.

Superintendent of Police Jatin Narwal said the police team was going to Baghmara police station last night after arresting one person identified as Rajesh Gupta on extortion charges.

At that time, Mahato and his men attacked the police team at Nishitpur, about 15 km from the coal city, and snatched Gupta from their custody.

One policeman was injured in the attack, Narwal said.

An FIR was lodged against Mahato and his supporters, charging them with attacking the police, snatching their arms and obstructing official work, the SP said.

Police are looking for Gupta after a company had on April 29 lodged a complaint against him for allegedly demanding extortion on coal transport, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjiv Kumar said, claiming Gupta was a supporter of the MLA.
