MLA brothers along with supporters detained

Two independent MLA brothers today accused the state government of patronising sand mafia and tried to launch agitation against them but was detained along with their supporters by the police here.

MLAs Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjit Singh Bains along with about 200 supporters were detained before launching their agitation against sand mafia from Jagraon bridge here, police said today.

Those who have been rounded up include 24 women and six municipal councillors.

"Several mafias, including sand mafia are active in the state. They are looting crores of rupees every month and this all is happening under the patronisation of ruling party in the state," alleged Simarjit Bains.
 

Police had already imposed section 144 of CrPC in the city whereby assembly of five or more persons are banned.

MLA Balwinder Bains alleged that the women workers were manhandled by the police while they were being taken to custody.

DCP Naveen Singla said, "The police have to detain as we have an information that they were going to create a law and order problem in the city.
