An MLA's son, who had hit an autorickshaw and a PCR van with his speeding BMW killing three persons and injuring five others, was sent to one-day police remand today.

Siddharth Maharia, who was with his relative in the car, was arrested under section 304 of the IPC (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

He was produced before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, who sent him to one-day police remand. He will be produced in the court tomorrow, investigating officer Kamal Nain said.

Siddharth, son of Independent MLA from Fatehpur Nandkishore Maharia, was allegedly driving the BMW at a speed of approximately 100 km/hr in the wee hours yesterday. The car first hit an autorickshaw and then rammed a PCR van nearby, police said.

Of the four men who were in the autorickshaw, three were killed while one was injuried. Four policemen including an assistant sub inspector were also injured.

As per the breathanalyser test conducted soon after the incident, Siddharth Maharia's alcohol level was found to be 152 mg/100 ml, while the permissible limit is 30 mg/100 ml, police said.

He, however, claimed that he was not driving the car and also denied having consumed alcohol.
