Press Trust of India Mumbai
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) today alleged that there was a Rs 900-crore scam in the billing for transportation of garbage in the city.

MNS group leader in the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, Sandeep Deshpande, levelled the allegation in today's meeting of the standing committee of the civic body, and demanded that the municipal commissioner himself should conduct an inquiry.

"The modus operandi is like that of (earlier nullah) de-silting scam...Contractors pick up the garbage from a point (to take it to dumping ground) but the truck is registered twice and thus they (transporters) are paid double money for a single trip," he said.

Deshpande claimed that according to his assessment based on documents, the scam was to the tune of Rs 900 crore.

This modus operandi of charging twice for a single trip is used by several garbage transportation contractors, but it is most common in 'T' ward of the city, he said.

"I am levelling this allegation on the basis of documents in my possession. A huge scam is going on in the transportation of garbage since 2012, ever since the contracts were awarded to the contractors," the MNS leader said.

Deshpande also demanded registration of FIR against the culprits and a police probe.
