A meat-laden truck was today set ablaze by a mob in Chakeri police station area suspecting that it carried beef.

Traffic police caught hold of the vehicle and its driver after it hit a bike last night and sped away, and took them to Chakeri police station.

During checking, police stumbled upon a huge quantity of meat hidden behind few baskets of vegetables. Rs 1.5 lakh were also recovered from under the driver's seat, police said.

As the news spread, over 12 people reached the police station and started protesting. Later, they set the truck on fire. Police tried to stop them but failed, a police spokeperson said.

The truck driver, identified as Jamaluddin from Bihar, is being interrogated and a probe is on in the matter, they said.
