A truck driver, suspected to be a member of a cattle theft gang, was killed today after a mob allegedly lynched him and chopped off his body parts in Golaghat district of Assam.

The residents of Rangamatty Goan blocked a mini-truck, carrying six cows and bulls by an alleged five-member cattle theft gang, in the wee hours and caught hold of its driver Junti Ali as four others fled from the spot, police officials said.

The driver's legs and one hand were chopped by the mob which led to his death, after which they kept the body on NH-37, police said.

The mob also set the mini-truck on fire and blocked the road at Rangamatty causing over hundreds of vehicles to remain stranded for more than six hours, demanding the arrest of the other four accused.

Golaghat Superintendent of Police P P Singh intervened and assured the locals of arresting the culprits, bringing the situation under control.

The locals recovered six cows and bulls which they later handed over to their respective owners, the officials said.
