An angry mob today ransacked a police station in Kaliachak and blocked the Chowringhee More on National Highway-34 for hours protesting the murder of a villager and injury to two others.

The police had to initially resort to baton charge and then fire five rounds in the air to disperse the agitated mob. Four policemen were injured as the mob pelted bricks on the police personnel.

Trouble started brewing in the Nawda Jadupur area of Kaliachak late last night, when a truck owner identified as Farizuddin (36) was killed after a stray bullet hit him while he was passing on his motorcycle. His pillion rider, Rezaul Karim, sustained bullet injuries as a clash was going on between two rival gangs of the area where bullets were being fired, the police said.

A driver of a SUV passing on NH-34 was also hit, the police said adding, the injured were rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital and were later on shifted to Kolkata for further treatment.

The miscreants took away the body of Farizuddin and dumped in a nearby ditch, which was later on recovered by the police.

As soon as the new of Farizuddin's death spread in his Charbaupur village in the neighbourhood, angry villagers blocked NH-34 and ransacked Kaliachak police station.

District Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Modi said, the entire incident was being probed and a large police contingent was in the area to maintain peace.
