A mob ransacked Saheed Nagar police station here and attacked police personnel injuring three on Monday, with the opposition parties claiming that ruling BJD activists were involved in the incident.

The attackers smashed television sets, furniture and flower pots of the police station.

Police said assistant Sub-Inspector Abhay Kumar Rout suffered injuries on the head after being hit with stones early on Monday. Two other policemen were also injured.

The incident appeared to have been a fallout of a clash between two groups in VSS Nagar area in the city, police said adding that one of the groups allegedly owed allegiance to a BJD leader.

Commissioner of Police Satyajit Mohanty said those involved in the incident have been identified.

"Such activities won't be tolerated. Stern action will be taken against the accused," he said.

The police registered three cases in this regard.

The incident evoked sharp reaction from opposition BJP and Congress which alleged that law and order machinery has crumbled in the state.

Senior BJP leader and Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleged that members of the student and youth wings of the BJD attacked the police station in the heart of the state capital.

Though a video of the scene is being circulated on social media, no action has been taken against those involved in the attack, Pradhan said in a statement.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee in a statement said the incident shows that common people in the state have become unsafe due to rowdyism by the ruling party goons who have not even spared police personnel on duty inside a police station.
