A mob of at least 300 people threw brickbats at the police when it tried to remove the body of a woman killed by a municipal dumper in Howrah town today.
The police said that the woman was crossing a road at Kathpole, near Tikiapara, when the dumper belonging to the Howrah Municipal Corporation hit her, resulting in her death on the spot.
When the police arrived, the agitated crowd prevented removal of the body and threw brickbats.
The mob alleged that the police made a lathichrge on them, but the police denied it.
The body was shifted when top police officers rushed to the spot and defused tension.
