The simulated polls were held at 28 polling stations each in Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram where representatives of political parties, including the Congress and the BJP as well as members of the civil society were present.
The exercise was part of the second field trial of the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system developed for the Electronic Voting Machines.
Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath and Election Commissioner H S Brahma and members of the Technical Expert Committee D T Shahani and Rajat Moona witnessed the simulated polls in Delhi.
The BJP had questioned the efficacy of the EVMs after the party lost the 2009 General Elections to the Congress-led UPA.
Senior BJP leader L K Advani had even claimed that the EVMs could be rigged in favour of a particular candidate and demanded re-introduction of ballot papers.
Later, a PIL was filed in the Supreme Court seeking formation of an expert group to examine the functioning of EVMs.
In VVPAT system, when a voter presses button for the candidate of his choice in the Electronic Voting Machine, a paper containing the serial number and name of the candidate will be printed and the voter can verify it.
The next round of field trials of VVPAT, will be held in Leh and Jaisalmer on August 10 and in Cherapunjee on August 25.
