Government provides financial assistance to madrasas and other traditional education centres for encouraging them to provide quality education, but their modernisation is a voluntary process, Centre has said in an RTI reply.

According to the reply given by the School Education and Literacy Department of the HRD Ministry, a total of Rs 18.27 crore has been given to 14,859 madrasas in several states under the Scheme to Provide Quality Education in Madrasas (SPQEM).

Under the scheme, financial assistance is given to madrasas and other traditional educational centres for including science, mathematics, social science, Hindi and English in their syllabus. However, modernisation is a voluntary process, it said.

The government also said that some changes are being made in the scheme.

The reply came in response to an RTI query about measures being taken by the government for modernisation of education in madrasas.
