Malaysia's Premier Najib Razak today praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being a "good reformist", saying he has attempted something that "lesser mortals would not."

During a brief exchange between the two leaders through video conferencing at the 'Economic Times Asian Business Leaders Conclave 2016' here, Razak praised Modi for the demonetisation move aimed at curbing black money.

"I must congratulate you for being a good reformist. You have done what lesser mortals would not have attempted," Razak said, addressing Modi.

"If you are courageous enough to implement reforms, you will reap the rewards," he added.

Razak is expected to visit India next year as both countries continue to strengthen bilateral ties, following Modi's visit to Malaysia last year.

In the conference, Modi also praised Razak, saying under his leadership Malaysia is moving towards its goal of achieving developed country status by 2020.

He said close ties between India and Malaysia are "integral to the success of our Act East Policy".

He said the "timeless ties" between India and Malaysia are reinforced by the presence of a large Indian community in that country.
