Modi, who is heading a delegation including some leading business honchos of Gujarat, has a packed itinerary. He is scheduled to attend 44 functions during his tour through Tokyo, Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe provinces of Japan.

Besides holding discussions with Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada, trade and industry officials, he would also be meeting top officials of Maruti Suzuki Corporation at its headquarters in Hamamatsu.

There was some speculation that Modi might invite the car major to expand its production capacity in Gujarat. Maruti Suzuki has proposed to invest Rs 4,000 crore in a greenfield plant near Becharaji in Mehasna district of Gujarat.

Modi's visit to Japan comes at a time when Maruti Suzuki India has announced a lock-out at its plant at Manesar in Haryana following violence on its premises.

He is slated to discuss details of the proposed bullet train project on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Pune section and Ahmedabad-Dholera Metro Bullet Train, besides two industrial parks to be set up by Japan in Gujarat as a part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

"Leaving for a four-day visit to Japan. Looking forward to visiting the land of the rising sun," Modi said on Twitter.

Japan had been `partner country' in two editions of biennial Vibrant Gujarat Investors' Summit.
