In a setback to the Congress in Gujarat, the party's Morbi district and city president switched over to the BJP today, just few days ahead of the bypolls to the Tankara assembly seat.

Morbi district Congress president Brijesh Merja and the city president Raju Kavar joined the BJP today along with their party workers.

Talking to reporters here after joining BJP with 45 Congress party workers, Merja said that he was attracted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's style of functioning and called the Congress party a "puddle".

"I have no complaints with the Congress, which has given me a lot, but now it has become a small puddle, while the BJP is getting strong everyday under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel," Merja said.

Morbi city Congress president Raju Kavar and 44 Congress workers also joined the BJP in presence of state ministers Govind Patel and Jayanti Kavadia.

Congress sources said that Merja was not happy with the party's selection of Laleet Kagthara as bypoll candidate from the Tankara-Padadhari seat and wanted his close aide Dilip Saradava to contest the election.

Gujarat agriculture minister Govind Patel welcomed Merja and said that he would make all possible efforts to make the BJP strong in the Tankara-Padadhari constituency in Morbi district.
