The number of doctors who sought the Good Standing Certificate from Medical Council of India (MCI) for going abroad during April 2011 to March 2012 was 1,333 as compared to 1,157 in the previous corresponding period.

In a written reply to a query on migration of doctors abroad, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said "government is aware of migration of doctors from the country."

While during the financial year 2009-10, as many as 1458 doctors had sought the certificate from the MCI, he said a total of 3,948 doctors have been issued the certificate during the last three years.

On steps taken by government to arrest this trend for doctors employed with it, Azad said, "Pay and allowances of doctors have been enhanced considerably after implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission. Age of superannuation of faculty of medical institutions has also been enhanced to 65 years."

Assured Promotion Scheme for faculty of central government institutions have also been revised to make it more beneficial, he said.

"Various allowances available to faculty like Non Practicing Allowance, Conveyance Allowance, Learning Resource Allowance etc too have been enhanced considerably," Azad said.
