More than 1.7 lakh hit in Assam floods

More than 1.7 lakh people remain affected by floods in Assam, where one person has died and 238 villages in six districts have submerged in the deluge.

One person died in the flood in Sivasagar district, which is hit by the calamity along with Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Morigaon, Jorhat and Dhemaji, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

ASDMA said Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri, Dikhow at Sivasagar, Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, Jia Bhorali at N T Road Crossing in Sonitpur district, Puthimari at N H road crossing in Kamrup, Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta and Sankosh in Dhubri district.
 

Meanwhile, 28 relief camps have been set up by district administrations in the affected regions for the 5,435 people staying there.

Standing crops in over 14,000 hectares of agricultural land were submerged by the deluge.

Besides severe erosion at several places, a number of roads, embankments and other infrastructure facilities have been damaged in many districts, ASDMA added.
