The mortal remains of BSF jawan Bijender Bahadur Singh, who was killed in firing by Pakistan, were today consigned to flames in his native village.

A pall of gloom descended on Vidya Bhawan Naraypur village after Singh was killed yesterday along the International Border (IB) in Jammu district's Arnia sector.

UP minister Shrikant Sharma, who was also present during the cremation, said, "The entire state is proud of Singh. Pakistan is being taught a lesson on every front. Our braveheart soldiers have gunned down 368 militants."

He also announced that a memorial will be built in memory of the martyr at his native village.

MP Ravindra Kushwaha gave a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to the slain soldier's father and Rs 20 lakh to his wife on behalf of the state government.
