In Goa, traffic police have noticed a trend that most of the road accidents have either taken place on Saturdays or Mondays, a senior official said today.
As per the data released by the Goa Police 1,121 road accidents have occurred this year till March in which 83 people were killed.
"The trend that we have noticed is that maximum number of accidents happen on Saturdays and Mondays. That may be because during those days more vehicles are on the road," Dharmesh Angle, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Goa told PTI today.
Angle and his team have been analysing the data available from various police stations which indicates around 98 per cent of the accidents which occurred this year were due to "rash and negligent" driving.
"Last year, 302 persons were killed on Goan roads, of which 119 were due to 'self accidents'. The riders or drivers are killing themselves by not abiding by traffic rules. That's suicidal," the IPS officer said.
"The accident data analysed during first three months of this year indicates that 98.21 per cent mishaps were due to rash and negligent driving," the Deputy SP said.
As per the data, 39 per cent of these accidents have taken place on the National Highways, while rest of them occurred on state highways and internal village roads.
Angle said 71 per cent of the accidents in the coastal state this year occurred on the straight roads as against 18 per cent which took place on the curves.
According to the data, nearly 47.16 per cent of the accidents were involving two-wheelers and 35.67 per cent involved cars, while rest were due to heavy vehicles and others.
Goa Police have initiated a drive across the state from April 15 which will continue till April 30 to inculcate discipline among the drivers.
In the last 10 days, 42,000 cases were registered across the state in a joint drive by Traffic Police and local police stations, Angle said.
"Total 1,300 cases were for driving without seatbelt," he said.
Goa police had also launched a special drive against drunken driving during last weekend wherein 161 people were fined, the officer added.
