A mother allegedly faked kidnapping of her two-year-old daughter in northwest Delhi to gain advantage over her husband in custody case of the child, police said today.
The woman approached the police last week alleging that her daughter, who had accompanied her to the Friday market in Swaroop Nagar was missing, said Vijay Singh, DCP (Northwest).
She alleged that there was pressure from the girl's father for the custody of the girl. A case of kidnapping was registered at Swaroop Nagar police station and messages were transmitted across radio stations and other channels. The CCTV footage from the area was also analysed, he said.

During analysis of the CCTV footage, it was observed that the mother of the missing girl was alone while going to the market. The fact that the family didn't provide a photograph of the girl further raised suspicion over the mother's story, the officer said.
When the mother was questioned again, she changed her story and alleged that the two women kidnapped her daughter at knife point, police said.
When police persisted with their line of questioning, the family cooked up another story and said that a relative of the girl had taken her to Mukarba Chowk and left her there and she was later found by a relative, said the officer.
They finally spilled the beans after sustained interrogation and said that they had planned the fictitious kidnapping of the girl to take advantage of the situation in the court battle against her father, added the officer.
All this while, the girl was kept at a relative's home in Jahangirpuri, the officer said.
