A 23-year-old woman has been arrested for injuring her nine-month-old baby girl by piercing a pen into the infant's private parts "to take revenge on her estranged partner."

Police said the child was admitted to the SAT hospital here with heavy bleeding on August 24. Hospital authorities informed police as they suspected that it might be a case of abuse.

On repeated questioning, the woman, Raji, hailing from Venjaramoodu near here, confessed that she pierced a pen into the private parts of the infant causing serious injury, police said.

The woman, who was arrested yesterday, told police that she was abandoned by her partner when she was two months pregnant and the anger towards him was the provocation for the act. She also showed signs of mental illness, police said.

During questioning, family members of the woman had ruled out the possibility of a person from outside committing the crime, sources said.
