A 35-year-old woman, mother of 10 children, died along with her still born 11th child following complications during advanced stage of pregnancy at the government hospital here, a senior health official said today.

Chitra, wife of an auto-driver near here, was suffering from malnutrition and had been carrying on with her routine work despite being in tenth month of pregnancy.

She recently complained of severe pain in the stomach and during examination doctors found the baby was dead, leading to fatal infection, Joint Director of Health Dr Ravi Kala said.

Chitra was very week as she did not take proper nutrition and tablets during the pregnancy. She died at the hospital early this week without responding to treatment after the baby was taken out, the official said.

Chitra had refused to undergo family planning operation in the past as her husband did not approve it. Now the plight of her 10 children -- four sons six daughters-- is pathetic.

She was married at the age of 16. On an average, she had delivered a child almost once every two years. Chitra had become very weak over the years due to malnutrition and other factors, doctors said.
