A 34-year-old woman and her two minor daughters were killed when they were hit by a car while trying to flee from an elephant that chased them in Sri Lanka, according to a media report.

The tragedy took place on Monday when the car crashed into them along the Pottuvil-Akkaraipattu road, police was quoted as saying by the Ceylon Daily News.

The victims came in a three wheeler to Pottuvil and as the vehicle ran out of petrol, three of them were standing by the roadside when they were chased by an elephant. While they were running to escape from the elephant, they were hit by the car, the report said.

The two daughters killed in the accident are six and 12. Another 11-year-old boy was injured in the accident, police said, adding that the driver of the car was arrested.
