With special emphasis on the collection of outstanding dues, Ganjam district surpassed the target for collection of motor vehicles tax in the last financial year.

While the government had fixed a target of Rs 118 crore, the collection was Rs 118.67 crore till March 31, 2017.

In 2015-16, the district had collected Rs 101 crore as motor vehicle tax.

"We exceeded the target as special emphasis was laid on collection of the outstanding dues. Around Rs 13 crore out of Rs 33 crore arrears was collected with the help of the tehsildars and police administration," Regional Transport Officer (RTO), S K Biswal, said.

A special drive was launched for collection of the taxes, especially the arrears, from the vehicle owners. Cases were registered against defaulters with the help of tehsildars and collection was made in the presence of police, he said.

During the collection drive, it was found that several vehicle owners, particularly tractor owners, were ignorant of the requirement for payment of motor vehicle tax annually to the government, the RTO said.

"Leaflets were distributed among the people in the villages appealing them to pay taxes on their vehicles," he said.
