Motorcycle expedition to mark Kargil victory flagged off

A motorcycle expedition by a team of Corps of Military police was today flagged off from here to Drass sector in Kashmir to mark the 19th anniversary of India's victory against Pakistan in the Kargil war.

MajorGeneral Sanjeev Narain, General Officer Commanding, Karnatakaand Kerala sub-area, flagged off the expedition of 'ShwetAshw', the elite motorcycle display team.

The five-member team will traverse more than 3,250 km coveringeight states and pass through places like Belgaum, Pune, Mumbai, Vadodara, Udaipur, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Manali, Sarchu and Leh before reaching Kargil War Memorial to take part in 'Vijay Diwas'celebrations beginning on July 24.

Lieutenant Colonel Vikram Rajebhosale and four other ranks from the Corps of Military Police would take part in the 20-dayexpedition on the 200cc TVS Apache RTR.

 

"The team will negotiate harsh weather conditions such asheavy rains, slippery roads, low visibility and rugged terrainon its way to the Kargil mountains," said a release from the Defence Public Relations Office.

The objective of the expedition is to strengthen brotherhood, pay homage to the supreme sacrifices made by our martyrs during the Kargil War and enhance the image of the Indian Army to motivate the youth to join this elite organisation, the press release said.

The Kargil war had broken out in May 1999 when A B Vajpayee was the prime minister and Nawaz Sharif was his counterpart in Pakistan.

Heavily armed Pakistan soldiers intruded into the Indianterritory during winter and captured the high altitude peaksof Himalayas in Kargil sector.

"Operation Vijay" was then carried out to flush out the soldiers in the garb of terrorists and finally on July 26, India regained its lost territories.
