Motorists using loud horns will have to pay heavy penalties and their driving licence could be cancelled under new guidelines issued by the Punjab government.

Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar today said that the new guidelines are to be implemented within the state to ensure safety and peace of the commuters, pedestrians and residents.

He said authorities concerned, including district transport officers, have been asked to take strict action against vehicle owners for using loud horns.

Strict action will be taken against those caught violating of the rule that includes heavy penalties in the form of hefty fines, impounding of vehicle or cancellation of driving licence, Kohar said.

Only police vehicles, fire brigades and ambulances are permitted under law to use multi-toned horns, that too only during the course of their duties, he said in a release.
