MoU signed for making use weather info in power sector

Earth System Science Organization, India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Power System Operation Corporation, an arm of Power Grid Corp, have inked an agreement to use weather information/forecast in the power sector.

"ESSO, IMD and POSOCO... Signed a Memorandum of Understanding for optimum use of weather information/forecast in the power sector," a press release issued by the Ministry of Earth Sciences said.

As per the MoU, all weather information provided by Earth System Science Organization (ESSO-IMD) shall be used by the power system operators across India for better management and for the purpose of analysis.

It provides that ESSO-IMD shall make available current weather information for identified stations; and forecasts at different time scales of temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall and other meteorological parameters of the identified stations/sectors.
 

The parties have agreed to provide expert opinion and knowledge support in areas of weather information and its impact on power distribution system.

As per the agreement, the Power System Operation Corporation (POSOCO) shall endeavor for economic assessment of impact of weather and climate information and regular feed mechanism shall be put in place for continued upgrade of services.

Weather information on different time scales is essential both in day-to-day energy management and for the definition of production and distribution infrastructures.

Day-to day-weather variations have an impact on load demand and energy production, transport and distribution management, as well as energy prices.
